On the weekend I headed to Bare Laser and Skin Clinic in Hampton to try laser for the very first time.
I have spoken before about this year being ‘my year’ to get my skin on track after either being pregnant or breastfeeding for nearly five years, and I have spent a lot of time reading up on different laser treatments.
One of the discoveries I made was the difference between IPL and laser. I feel like this is something I want to quickly mention because if you’re a first timer like me, its important that you understand the difference so you know what you’re getting. While they both emit light energy, there’s a big difference between Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and a laser. The IPL light has multiple wavelengths of light which are more spread out (imagine the beam of a torch) and this delivers less energy than a targeted laser, which is a concentrated beam of light that travels deeper into the skin. IPL treatments can be gentler with less down time, whereas laser offers faster results.
When I arrived at the clinic, I completed a form with my skincare concerns (pigmentation, fine lines, hydration, texture) and then sat down for a chat with Alishia. It is so important to me to be treated by professionals with experience….I am not going to let just anyone touch my face with a laser. Alishia is a qualified dermal therapist who has been in the industry for a long time and knows what she is doing. Her passion was clear to see as we sat down for a consult and she educated me on pigmentation and sun damage with little drawings and models. She is extremely honest and her team help people daily with realistic advice and they say they would rather turn away business than give someone a treatment they don’t need.
I told her about my research and this being the ‘year of skincare’ for me, and that I was open to try anything. Given my skincare concerns, Alishia suggested a Laser Rejuvenation treatment. Knowing the above information about targeted lasers being more effective I was really excited to give it a go but immediately wondered if I needed some sort of numbing cream because I’m a massive sook.
I lay down and Alicia cleansed my face and explained that the laser itself was going to feel like ‘pins and needles’. I wondered if ‘pins and needles’ was a euphemism for a sharp, horrible, stingy feeling and wondered where the offer of numbing cream was.
She gave me one little test to feel the sensation and I was pleased and relieved that the description of pins and needles was very true. After going over my face with the laser she then asked me if there were any freckles or beauty spots I wanted to keep. I assured her they could all take a hike and she targeted them once again with the laser. This time the sensation was a little more intense but by this stage I was getting addicted to the feeling and loved knowing that with each zap a sunspot was going to be obliterated (well, hopefully).
I can absolutely assure you that I do not like pain so if you’re on the edge about whether or not to give this a go, just know that I would have one of these treatments over any kind of waxing any day.
Finally I was placed under a red LED light for 15 minutes (this helps with brightening and rejuvenating the skin) and during this time I was so relaxed I could easily have fallen asleep.
At the end of this treatment I was excited to see what my skin looked like. Alishia had said my skin may look red for about an hour. When I looked in the mirror it didn’t look particularly red but my pigmentation definitely stood out more.
I wasn’t able to put anything on my face that night (I went to a birthday party sans makeup) and can’t use any products with active ingredients for four days. Whilst my pigmentation REALLY stands out at the moment, I cannot wait to see the results of this treatment in a couple of weeks and compare my before and after photos. I’m not 100% comfortable posting this photo of me the night of my treatment as I wouldn’t normally leave the house without makeup, but in the interest of showing you REAL results, here is an unfiltered snap taken on my phone en route to the party. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am for that pigmentation to disappear and to see the results in my skin tone and texture.
I am working with Bare Skin and Laser Clinic as I feel like I am in very safe hands. All opinions expressed, as always, are my own. I look forward to sharing more of this skincare journey with you. Alishia has kindly provided me with some Skinceutical products with delicious active ingredients, which I will be testing out in the coming weeks and I’ll be excited to report on how I find them.
